Cold Chain

Cold chain transport refers to the kind of transport that requires goods being kept in a constant temperature at all times, including times for loading and unloading materials, changing transportation modes or changing packaging equipments. This could be road transport, sea transport, rail transport, air transport or an integrated mode of transport. Cold chain transportation is an important part of cold chain logistics. It has a high transport cost and involves a more sophisticated mobile refrigeration and low temperature incubator technology. Cold chain management faces higher risks and uncertainties.  Three main categories are:

fresh products: vegetables, fruits; meat, poultry, eggs; aquatic products, floral products.

processed foods: frozen food, poultry, meat, aquatic products and other packaging foods, ice cream and dairy products; fast food ingredients

pharmaceuticals: a various type of injections and agents.

Rotten food causes China 70 billion yuan per year, amounting to 20% of its total food production. Some foods have to be discarded during the transport. Experts argue the lack of cold chain system is to be blamed.

Most perishable food rots during the transport except a few due to missing care or its inability to sustain the ride. Rot is the result of microorganisms activity for animal products and a respiration process for plants.  With the provided explanation, one should see low temperatures can limit the growth of microorganisms, slow down the respiration process and extend the lifetime of perishable goods.

Cold chain transport relies on special vehicles.  In addition to the same body and mechanism as most trucks have, these vehicles need to be equipped with freezers or refrigerations. Special attention is put to continued refrigeration as microbial activity and respiration process intensify at an increased temperature.  If this cannot be assured, the food may begin to rot. The mode of transport depends on type of goods, season, shipping distance and destination. Try to speed up by organizing a door-to-door transport. The temperature should comply with regulations. To maintain a low temperature, leave certain space for fruits and vegetables to exhaust the heat.

Cold chain transport requires a low temperature in long, middle and short distance rides. It involves such types of transportation as low railway cargos, refrigerated trucks, refrigerated vehicles, refrigerated ships, refrigerated containers and so on. Temperature fluctuation is the main cause of a deteriorated quality and therefore transport vehicles should have a reliable performance.  The ability to maintain a low temperature is especially essential for long distance transport.
